20 Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention terms
Here is a few terms that would be useful if you planned working as a social worker.
Abuse
Verb
Treat (a person or an animal) with cruelty or violence, especially regularly or repeatedly. As a social worker, most of our clients are, have been or have done abuse in their life, so that is something that is part of our job.
Example: Maria was abused by her father as a child, he was beating her and her mother.

Addict
noun
Someone who has a drug dependence. Most of the time they have physical symptoms when they don't have their dose.
Example: John is an addict, he says he can't live without his heroin.

Alcohol
noun
A colorless volatile flammable liquid that is produced by the natural fermentation of sugars and is the intoxicating constituent of wine, beer, spirits, and other drinks. Most of our clients had a dark past with alcohol, so it is also part of the job.
Example: Frank drinks alcohol since he is 12 years old.

Animation
noun
Methods of supervising a group that promote the integration and participation of its members. In our job, we are always animating people, for a game, for a learning experience, just to tell something, it is an everyday action.
Example: I have an animation to do with the kids, we will be learning a new dance.

Belongingness
noun
Belongingness is the human emotional need to be an accepted member of a group. Whether it is family, friends, co-workers, a religion, or something else, people tend to have an 'inherent' desire to belong and be an important part of something greater than themselves. This implies a relationship that is greater than simple acquaintance or familiarity. The need to belong is the need to give and receive attention to and from others. In our job, most of our clients won't quit their bad behavior because they feel like they belong to someone: most of the times it's their friends who do the same thing.
Example: When he smokes crack with his friend, Justin fills his needs of belongingness.

Clients
noun
In an intervention context, our clients are the people we are trying to help, it can be a kid, a teenager, an adult, an old person, a prisoner, a student, a drug addict, etc.
Example: I am meeting my client at 5:00 PM.

Crime
noun
An action or omission that constitutes an offense that may be prosecuted by the state and is punishable by law.
Example: Denis has made a lot of crime in his life.

Criminal
noun
A person who has committed a crime. In our job, we meet a lot of criminal because most of our clients, even if they are not from prison, have done a crime in their life, as small as it can be.
Example: Henry has been selling drugs since his 20s, he is a criminal.

Drugs
noun
A medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body. In our job, most of our clients do take drugs in a moment of their lives
Example: I think Sarah took some drug last night.

Empathy
noun
The ability to understand and share the feelings of another without physically expressing them.
Example: I have a lot of empathy for this kid who suffered a lot.

Homeless
noun
(of a person) without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets. It's one type of clients we have as a social worker.
Example: Bob has been homeless for 20 years.

Intervention Plan (IP)
noun
The intervention plan, whether for the education network or the health and social services network, consists of action planning aimed at promoting the development and success of a person who requires, in due to a difficulty or a deficiency, the implementation of coordinated actions.
Example: I made an intervention plan with Tony to help him recover from his drug addiction.

Jail
noun
Enclosed establishment designed to receive delinquents sentenced to a custodial sentence, or defendants pending trial. I can do plenty of different job as a social worker and working as a jail guard is one of them so jail is part of my job too. Also, there might be some of my clients that are going or went to jail.
Example: Thomas got caught by the police, and he is now going to jail.

Mental Health
noun
A person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being.
Example: Everyone's mental health is affected by the covid 19.

Patience
noun
The capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset. That is like the main skills you need to be a social worker, it's like the foundation. We will be waiting all the time for our clients to move on but most of the time it doesn't happen. Patience is the key.
Example: It takes a lot of patience to tolerate those teenagers.

Resistance
noun
Resisting, opposing one force (to another). In an intervention context, resistance can be seen as teenagers who are stuck in youth center, and don't want the help we are offering them to change their behavior. It's a behavior our clients adopt to protect themselves.
Example: Alex is still in resistance, he is not collaborating to make his intervention plan, he doesn't want to talk to me.

Self-confidence
noun
A feeling of trust in our abilities, qualities, and judgment. Many clients we have as a social working have a lack of self-confidence and this is part of most problems they have.
Example: I can see Arnold has a lack of self-confidence.

Sexuality
noun
Capacity for sexual feelings. In an intervention context, sexuality is a subject we are confronted to a lot of times, because our clients sometimes have some problem with their sexuality, for example prostitution or abuse.
Example: Let's talk about your sexuality.

Violence
noun
Behavior involving physical or psychological force intended to hurt, damage, control or kill someone or something. Violence is also part of our job since our clients are directly related to it, as a victim or as an offender.
Example: Mark express his violence by hitting his wife.

Youth Center
noun
A place or organization providing leisure activities for young people. Kids who are abused or are starting to have criminal behavior are going to a youth center to help them recover from their problems. As a social worker, we are in the youth center to help those kids with their problems.
Example: Nick will pass the next few months in a youth center since he is having some violences trouble with his family.
